At IEEE-IUS 2023, Montreal we presented our results obtained testing Li-ion pouch cells using wideband, air-coupled ultrasound and spectral analysis in the frequency range 0.1-1.5 MHz. Results show that i) it is possible to generate and sense thickness resonances, ii) these resonances are sensitive to the state of charge and temperature of the battery. With significant advances in precission and scalability over conventional contact techniques already used for this purpose, these results open the way for a fast and non-destructive testing and quality testing of Li-ion batteries in the production line, that make possible to test the 100% of the production in real time.
